One of the big questions levelled at the PlayStation 5 which has still gone unanswered a week or so prior to launch is whether it’ll support 1440p output. This resolution is often used by monitors, particularly those that refresh at 120Hz, and there had been hope that Sony’s next-gen console would support them.
Unfortunately, an IGN Italy report suggests that won’t be the case. A translation of the publication’s article states that the website’s editorial staff learned “directly from Sony” that the system won’t support the oft-requested feature. This is perhaps unsurprising, after the PS4 Pro also skipped 1440p monitors, offering an upscaled 1080p image instead.
The news will be sure to disappoint those who plan to play on a 1440p screen, especially after manufacturer BenQ had raised hopes with an FAQ late last month. Were you hoping to enjoy PS5 on a QHD monitor at all? Maybe consider browsing our Best 4K TVs for PS5 guide instead.

I feel bad for the people with 1440p TVs and Monitors, Sony hates those people.
There no source
Will the PS5 run 120hz on my 144hz monitor ?
@Fred_Red Look at the bottom of the article,
You should see "[source it.ign.com, via resetera.com]
@Fred_Red I am the source
@nessisonett That works too
Get ready to get destroyed by xbots x)
@iStarkill If it didn't, that would be embarrassing for Sony.
IF It's true, what a strange decision to pick 8k tvs over 1440p.. Seems kinda like dumb decision if they don't support 1440p..
@AFCC I rarely see Console Wars on this site. You know, before I saw your comment.
@Turismofan88 Yeah, especially since 1440p is more widespread than 8K
[God I've been commenting way to much 😂]
@HotGoomba___Rebrand Hey its all good bro
@nessisonett 😂
👍 up just for the gif
@Turismofan88 Future proofing I guess?
insert Shia Labeouf clapping gif
Lets be real, the 1440p crowd is a small group of people, and mostly PC gamers. The PS5 is a home console, for living room televisions.
@HotGoomba___Rebrand I never see console wars on this site. I just see it on reddit and stuff
Oh and facebook! Even Push face has it
Definitely a small group cares about this, and it's not like you can't play on a monitor. Still, doesn't seem hard to update PS5 firmware with if it's not in. Nice thing to do from Sony really.
@Turismofan88 think its stupid as well, wasn't there a post somewhere about Demons Souls running at 1440p?
@GamingVeteran "1440p crowd is a small group of people"
The 8K crowd is several times smaller and subtracted by 10 then the 1440p group, not a valid point 🙅
Why wouldn't 1440p work?
@iStarkill Yes. If PS5 doesn't end up supporting 1440p then it will be 1080p at 120hz or 4K at 120hz if you have DP 1.3 or HDMI 2.1
@Juanalf See you are deflecting now, 8k isn't the issue is it. Why didn't you mention 4k? is it because it currently dominates the market at this point. My post is still true.
@Dmurph I intend to get the best out of the ps5 on my 27 1080p 144hz monitor . I’ll have to see for myself if 4K 120hz is worth the price.
Im so tired of hearing about PS5 news from everywhere but the horses mouth
How doesn’t PushSquare know if it’s supported or not don’t they have a means to test!?!
@GamingVeteran It really shouldn't be this big issue. There's no need to throw a bunch of people with 1440p monitors under the bus, a simple software update from Sony could make everyone happy.
Just asking... but, isn't it a fact that a PS5 will only render 4k and 120hz, ONLY IF your 4k or 8k TV has HDMI 2.1? If that's the case, I'm screwed as well, even though I bought a huge one at the beginning of this year
I'm super confused tbh, I honestly thought 1440p was 4k
Nah id be surprised if it could run 4K 120 fps. The specs inside ps5 is more equal to a gtx 1660 graphics card from nvidia which struggles to get above 4K60fps. And 8K is just another pipe dream as itll probably run 8K 20 fps or something like that. I wonder if its upscaled 8K because even native 4K is hard to reach. Im surprised that ps4 pro couldnt even do native 1440p. All this time it was upscaled 1080p. Id believe they would intend to run ps5 at upscaled 1080p 120 fps.
1440p 100+ fps pc players was the norm last gen.
If console makers didnt make the leap to try to catch up to pc standard we would probably just be staring at a ps5 thats only capable of being a nintendo switch. people that spent over $5000 on their gaming rig to play 4K@60fps werent that many last gen. Most pc players were 1440p 144 fps players like myself.
@Nepp67 nah 1440p is 2K sony was pretty much lying when they advertised ps4 pro was doing 4K but its funny that it wasnt even doing native 1440p its was 1080p upscaling. Man i feel scammed cause i bought one.
@markkoo im with you too i bought my tv last year thinking the company said they would support all their 2019 oled tvs for hdmi 2.1 through a firmware update til i found out the 2019 tv i bought was a 2018 model. Damn amazon third party scammers.
I guess ill either have to fork out another $5000 for 8Ktv or just deal with it an play 4K60fps hopefully.
@LemonHaze umm yea the point is if you can barely afford $500 and cant buy a 4ktv that the price came down considerably at under $1000 maybe you shouldnt be gaming? Pick a new hobby that isnt that expensive. I saw some people only play one game an entire console cycle like d2 or fortnite and i was puzzled as i probably played 4000 titles thru ps4 xb1 nsw and pc. I wonder if they are upgrading to ps5 to continue to play that one game.
@Sub-Xero I can answer that question. If you see the % of people who have a 4K TV compare to 1080P is small but, those who have a 4K TV almost 0.9% have HDMI 2.1 for 4K 120hz. The majority of the TV's out there just support 4K 60hz with HDMI 2.0 or below. But if you have a TV with 120hz even if doesn't have HDMI 2.1 you can play 1440P @120hz and it's better than 4K 60hz. If you gane on PC almost 80% of those monitors are 1440p (They call it 2K) with 144hz. If the PS5 supports 1440p it's a huge win for SONY and gamers who have gaming PC. And sorry for my English, is not my primary language!
@BansheeNorn @Shepherd_Tallon I prefer having an pro, but the Pro basically got their lunch money taking away by the X..
@Shepherd_Tallon Perhaps, Still find it funny with their priorities putting an feature ,that's not really around people's homes over more ready usable feature
@WaveWitch
I'm confused by why people are confused by dynamic 4k. 😃
Seems a reasonable way to prioritise framerate 🤷♂️
Now if the resolution ends up like dropping to 1080p then yes it's a real issue but no need to assume the worst.
what a great console war we have right now, on one side we have a company which listens to the players and build a better product and on the other side we have Sony
https://youtu.be/xjee0qoDwJ4
Buy a telly instead of a tiny screen. This is an X related video but only because he's already done a ps one and they're pretty much similar content and said video will be below this one.
I don't get why people get surprised by this. It's console built for bedroom/living room tv's. There's no such thing a 1440p tv
I bet the PS5 Pro will tho... hmmmm?
I have very powerful PC's at home and even my laptop has a RTX 2080 Super in it, I need them for work. The reason I play on PS4/5 is to play on the big screen from the sofa. I few people playing on monitors would mostly be streamers I guess but that's a tiny fraction of the user base
Oh no, whatever shall we do
You would be Fffffffffffffing furious IF you bought a 120Hz Monitor just for you Ps5............ just to hear this a week before launch.
Ridiculous imho. It should support 1440p instead of 8k.
@LemonHaze That's a very limited point of view. A lot of people are using PC monitors because it provides a cleaner experience than a TV. 1440p is not a standard in PC gaming but it's certainly getting there. There is no reason for Sony not to implement this.
As for saving money, you're forgetting that a lot of people just want to have one display for both PC and PS5. Moving to a 4k monitor isn't cheap. There's the cost of the monitor and, for many, a new graphics card. Alternatively they can force their shiny new console to downgrade itself to 1080p and upscale it through the monitor to 1440p.
You could be looking at quadrupling the price of the PS5 because Sony overlooked something silly.
@JapaneseSonic yes indeed, do you care to show me the ones available on PS5 (P.S. a remake of an old game is NOT a new exclusive) (P.S. a game which will only be released in December or later isn't a launch title either)
@WaveWitch "when you take a look at the resolution jump between 480p, to 720p and then 1080p, wouldn't 1440p be the next logical or appropriate jump when sided with the resolutions before it?"
No, 1620 would be because of the 1.5x increase. 1440 us just and odd number. Strange that they don't support all resolutions though. But PS5 isn't even out yet and this could be fixed with a firmware upgrade.
@JapaneseSonic
Astro's Playroom is a tech demo,
Demon Souls is a remake,
Godfall is available on PC,
Miles Morales is more like a DLC also available on PS4
so basically the console sellers should be Bugsnax, and Sackboy and The Pathless, all 3 are games we barely heard about (well they look like Nintendo games)
you won't sell me a PS5 with that (and so far I'm not getting a Series X either)
The smart move is, don't be buying display devices for a games console that doesn't have a fully confirmed spec yet, or planning to pair it to an existing display at a specific less common resolution and you won't be disappointed.
As a general rule, some gamers have a really bad habit of pre-empting things instead of just waiting, so in effect they burn themselves because they're impatient. Or whining that a device doesn't support a specific niche feature they want instead of taking said device on it's merits.
@itsMeaningless Worse than that, it won't work jury rigged into my Texas Instruments calculator monochrome dot matrix display. The nerve of these games consoles developers these days, to not support every niche feature request of every gamer. They suck and I'm going to take to the Internet to bitch about it incessantly like an angry little virgin with nothing better to do. 😂😁
@BansheeNorn
Thank you very much for your input. It makes reconsider things a lot. Sony's high specs potential seems mostly a pipe dream for 95% of their customers, since even audio won't get to the new standards if you don't even have a modern speaker system with many channels and plenty of codecs. I'm leaning to try out a new gen Xbox, so I could take advantage of Game Pass and play a longer list of PC titles on my standard TV, and wait for a year until Sony's prices are way more competitive and upgrade my entire home entertainment setup. Have a wonderful day!
Dissapointing! Surely they’d want to appeal to as many people as possible. Seems like a no brainer to add some extra support for potential PC buyers.
HAHAHA!!!! Imagine playing on anything less than a 4K in today's era.
@graysoncharles PS5 GAMES WILL RUN 4K NATIVE 60FPS AND EVEN 120FPS ALSO PS5 IS 8K READY so don't give me this upscaling ***** am sick and tired of all this fake 4k or Ps5 wont run 4k instead its upscaling it runs 4k native 60fps just like that xbox series x fact U won't even see difference between them
@Bejito81 u mean Sony listens to the players brings out awesome EXCLUSIVEs While other side only care about making money from gamepass doesn't care if u buy the new xbox only gamepass
@itsMeaningless Hahaha exactly. I see you get it 👍🏻😃
@graysoncharles Ps5 games wil Run 4k 60fps even up to 120fps 8k ready just like xbox series x so YOUR WRONG its not upscaling its NATIVE 4K 60FPS
@Falkirk4life well, so far I do NOT see any awesome exclusive on PS5
so right now, if I had to choose one, knowing none have any exclusive I want, I would get the one with the better hardware and software and that one is NOT the PS5
@Bejito81 so pc then cause xbox isn't much better( no exclusives) not much difference between themboth run 4k 60fps native and up to 120fps both 8k ready am getting both consoles but no rush getting xbox series x as my pc has gamepass and my xbox one
@Falkirk4life
you can NOT build a PC with the same power for 499
it is just not possible
but right now I m not buying anything, I'll wait and see
Okay....I'm confused.
Doesn't Demon's have a performance mode that runs at 1440p? So what, did they just lie about that or am I missing something super obvious here?
1440p is such a great resolution. I have a 1440p 144hz and 4k 120hz monitors and play most pc games at 1440p
I'm afraid of choppy 4K perfomance instead of smooth 2K experience. Especially with raytracing effects enabled. I know Sony says PS5 will handle UP TO 4K 120 Hz, but honestly I don't believe it. Some game developers already stated their game will run at 30 fps.
